What has happened to our hymns?

Have we outgrown the simplicity of the hymns? is the Ole Rugged Cross, not that rugged anymore? is Amazing Grace…just not that amazing any more? or has Blessed Assurance, lost its assurance?

Has the glitz, lighting, amps, fog…over shadowed the words being sung? Is putting on a show, I mean…trying to “get” the un-saved in, to make comfort the key point of what praise is? Are we really praising or are we putting on a show?

All these questions have rolled around in my mind, not just recently….but for many years. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy all types of worship music…country, rock, hymns, loud…as long as the words are recognizable and the intend is to sing praises to our Heavenly Father..

Is the quietness of seeking God’s presence lost in our loud world? Why is embracing our past too old for all….? As we all are different, so unique…we are old, young, experienced and still babes…why not incorporate our past into our future…We are in a time where our youth have never heard some of the hymns, praises of old….But like God, in a sense these hymns meaning is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow..the simplicity of the lyrics, melody and music can cause the spirit to soar.

These are just my thoughts….again, I enjoy current types of music, but I will mention that there is a big part of me that wonders why the worship leaders of today for the most part have left these great hymns by the wayside. There is merit and praise in these works of art! The Rugged Cross is still so rugged, and again I am assured by the Blessings.

Lets not let all the past be lost!
